What is Visceral fat?

This morning I taught a toning class, then in the evening my favorite step class.

Do you know what Visceral Fat is?  Visceral fat is the fat that is down deep in your body, usually in the belly, hence the term “Belly Fat”.  It is different than subcutaneous fat, which is the fat that is outside the body…which you can see and touch.  Visceral fat becomes an issue usually after menopause.  You can’t see it, so even a “thin” person could have a lot of visceral fat and not realize it.  What you eat DOES NOT cause visceral fat.  Rather, inflammation in the body and metabolic issues (sluggish metabolism) are the main culprits.  Menopause brings on inflammation, and changes to the body, including metabolic changes.  This is why women become frustrated, because no matter how well they eat and exercise, they can’t make changes, such as weight loss.  And watching calories, and exercise won’t do anything to change the visceral fat situation.

So what can you do?  You have to get to the root of the problem, which is your metabolism.  You have to change your metabolism, or jump start it so to speak.
