This time of year can often bring feelings of depression or sadness. In fact there is even a term for it: SAD….Seasonal Affective Disorder. I actually have had SAD myself since I was in my early 30’s although it has lessened drastically now that I am in my 50’s . It is a rough affliction: feelings of depression, sadness and fear characterize this affliction found in the winter months, brought on by decreased sunlight. Artificial sunlight has been found to help somewhat, and January tends to be the most intense month.

One way that I have found to combat this is Exercise. That’s right! Exercise leads to increased serotonin levels, and the release of endorphins. These are responsible for feelings of well being. I have felt depression during the winter months, and it is always eased by exercise. In fact, exercise is like your own personal therapist, and costs a lot less! All joking aside, counseling is a very effective means of dealing with depression and sadness. If you add exercise to this you have a very powerful tool to help you get through the winter months and SAD. In fact, if you suffer from chronic depression, try adding exercise into your week and you might find it lessens or alleviates your depression. It’s worth a try!
